Senaikkizhangu Masiyal(Yam Sambar)

Ingredients:

Yam (Senaikkizhangu)  -  200 gms
Tamarind                     -  1 lemon sized
Gree chillies                 -  2 nos
Red chillies                  -  2 nos
Gingely oil (nallennai)   -  2 table spoons
Mustard seeds             -  1 table spoon
Black gram dal            -  1 table spoon
Thoor dal                    -  1 table spoon
Jaggery                        -  1/2 tea spoon
Asafoitida                    -  1/2 tea spoon
Turmeric powder         -  1/2 tea spoon
Fresh coriander leaves  -  1 table spoon
Salt to taste

1.  Soak tamarind in warm water for 1/2 hr. and squeeze it and collect 1 cup of medium thick juice.
2.  Clean, wash and boil senai till soft. (can even pressure cook).
3.  Mash boiled senai.
4.  Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard, black gram dal, thoor dal and finely broken red chillies.
5.  After the mustard crackles and the dals turn golden brown add the finely chopped green chillies and finely chopped coriander leaves.
6.  Stir well till the green chillies are cooked and then add the tamarind juice, salt and turmeric powder.
7.  As soon as the tamarind juice starts boiling add the mashed yam.
8.  Let it boil for 5 mins.  add the jaggery.
9.  The masiyal should be a thick gravy like consistancy.
10.Serve hot with rice or roti..
