(Green gram dal sambar) Payathamparuppu Masiyal

Ingredients:

Green gram dal            -  3 - 4 table spoons
Tamarind                     -  1 lemon size
Green chilies                - 2 - 3 nos
Red chilies                   -  2 - 3 nos
Curry leaves                -  a  few leaves
Tomatoes                    -  2 - 3 nos
Mustard seeds             -  1 table spoons
Black gram dal             -  1 tea spoon
Red gram dal(Thoor)    -  1 tea spoon
Asafoitida                     -  1/2 tea spoon
Turmeric powder          -  1/2 tea spoon
Cooking oil or ghee       -  1 table spoon

1.  Soak tamarind in warm water for 1/2 hr and take 1 cup of juice and keep it aside.
2.  Wash and cook green gram dal till done.
3.  Finely chop green chilies and tomatoes.
4.  Heat oil or ghee in a kadai and add mustards, black gram dal, thoor dal and finely broken red chilies.
5.  As soon as the mustard crackles and the dals turn golden brown add asafoitida and finely chopped tomatoes and green chilies.
6.  Stir fry till the tomatoes turn soft then add the tamarind juice.
7.  Also add the cooked paythamparuppu and boil till the whole mixture boil together and blend well.
8.  Add water if necessary and let the whole mixture becomes thick and gravy like.
9.  Remove from stove and serve with rice and ghee.
